When food allergy changes the whole routine

Food allergy is not only a medical diagnosis. It can shape how a family eats, travels, and plans the day. A specialist visit can bring more clarity and peace of mind about the next step.

If you or your child has had a reaction, carries epinephrine, or feels anxious about accidental exposure, start with a careful food allergy consultation.

The goal is not to rush toward treatment. It is to make an informed plan.

01

A reaction after eating

Learn what to bring to a food allergy evaluation and why the details of a past reaction matter.

02

Avoiding a diagnosed food

Talk through current precautions, epinephrine planning, and longer-term options.

See if OIT is right for you

OIT is a specialist-guided option for selected people with food allergy. A short eligibility guide can help you prepare for the conversation, but only an in-person clinical evaluation can determine candidacy.

OIT may be worth discussing if you have a confirmed food allergy and want to explore a structured path toward greater protection or food freedom. A history of anaphylaxis does not automatically exclude you from treatment—in fact, many patients who have experienced severe reactions are among those who most value the added protection that desensitization may provide. Treatment typically involves regular dosing and in-office visits during the build-up phase, followed by an individualized maintenance plan. For many patients, dosing can become less frequent once a stable level of desensitization has been achieved. Your treatment plan is tailored to your medical history, safety considerations, and personal goals.

THE PARIS OIT PROGRAM

The Paris OIT Program, explained clearly

The Paris OIT Program is an in-person oral immunotherapy program for selected children and adults with food allergies, including peanut, tree nuts, egg, milk, sesame, and other foods. Treatment uses carefully measured amounts of the allergen to gradually build tolerance over time, with dose increases performed in the office under direct medical supervision. Each treatment plan is individualized to the patient's allergy, medical history, and goals.

According to Dr. Jason C. Paris, MD, OIT is not a quick fix and it is not the same as telling someone to try an allergenic food at home. The program begins with a longer Day 1 escalation visit, continues with closely spaced up-dose visits, and requires a daily home dose between visits. The goal and maintenance dose are individualized: some patients may seek a higher level of dietary flexibility, while others may choose a lower maintenance dose intended to support bite-protection goals. Outcomes, risks, and the right goal vary by patient.

Food allergy questions, answered.

Clear information can make the next step easier. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about oral immunotherapy and care at The Food Allergy Clinic.

Q1. What is oral immunotherapy, or OIT?

Oral immunotherapy is a specialist-guided treatment that uses carefully measured amounts of an allergenic food over time. The goal is to gradually increase the amount a patient can tolerate and reduce the risk associated with accidental exposure.

No. OIT is not considered a cure for food allergy. The goal is to increase tolerance to an allergen and provide a greater level of protection from accidental exposure. Individual treatment goals and outcomes vary.

Some patients may achieve sustained unresponsiveness (remission): after completing OIT and stopping the food for a period of time, they can still tolerate it. This occurs in a subset of patients, and rates vary considerably by food, age, duration of therapy, and protocol.

Not at all. A history of anaphylaxis does not exclude you from OIT, and for many patients it is a strong reason to consider OIT as a protective measure. Eligibility still depends on your medical history, diagnosis, current health, and other individual factors, so a consultation is the first step.

The Paris OIT Program provides oral immunotherapy for selected patients with peanut, tree nut, egg, milk, sesame, and other food allergies. Treatment recommendations are individualized following a clinical evaluation.

No. Dose increases are performed in the office under direct clinical supervision. Patients then follow their prescribed maintenance or home-dosing plan between visits. You should never increase an OIT dose on your own.

Yes. OIT does not eliminate the need for appropriate food-allergy precautions or emergency planning. Patients should continue to follow the guidance provided by their allergy team, including carrying prescribed epinephrine when advised.
